Role summary
The manager will be part of the Company project team and will collaborate closely with other Functional SafetyThe part of overall safety that depends on a system or equipment operating correctly in response to its inputs, including safe management of faults and failures. The role focuses on system-level Functional Safety engineering according to ISO 26262Road Vehicles - Functional Safety. Automotive functional safety standard defining ASILAutomotive Safety Integrity Level (A to D) under ISO 26262, derived from severity, exposure, and controllability. The position is open to candidates based in the United States (Michigan preferred) or Canada (Ontario or Quebec preferred).
Responsibilities
- Support Safety plan, DIA, Safety CaseA structured argument, supported by a body of evidence, that a system is acceptably safe for a specific application in a specific environment. Read more and supplier coordination activities
- Execute impact analyses, identify gaps, and define/recommend required adaptations
- Lead the execution of Hazard AnalysisThe umbrella term for systematic techniques that identify how a system can cause harm and evaluate the resulting risk, from early preliminary analyses to detailed causal studies. Read more and Risk Assessments (HARAHazard Analysis and Risk Assessment: the concept-phase activity and resulting document that identifies hazards and derives safety goals and integrity targets. Read more) and deriving the corresponding safety goals
- Translate safety goals into Functional and Technical Safety Concepts (FSC/TSC)
- Perform safety analyses, including FMEAFailure Modes and Effects Analysis: a bottom-up method cataloging how components fail and what effects those failures produce. Read more, FTA and DFA
- Develop and maintain safety verification and validation plans, specifications, test cases, reports, and compliance evidence
- Review and assess functional safety work products for compliance with ISO 26262 and related standards
- Participate in technical discussion as part of business development efforts
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering, Computer Engineering, or related field.
- 10+ years’ experience in system safety engineering, with a focus on automotive systems.
- Strong hands-on knowledge of ISO 26262 Parts 2, 3 and 4.
- Proven experience developing FSCs/TSCs and FSRs/TSRs.
- Practical experience performing FMEA, FTA and DFA.
- Experience with automotive and off-road vehicles
- Experience with powertrain systems (big differentiator)
- Able to interface with hardware and/or software functional safety teams (ISO 26262 Parts 5 and 6).
- Experience working across OEM and Tier-1/supplier interfaces.
- Strong communication skills and ability to work with international customers and suppliers.
